General Course Overview

1. Theory and Methods of TESOL

Introduces major approaches to second-language teaching and learning, including communicative, task-based, and skill-based instruction. Students also explore adult
learning principles, student-centred instruction, cooperative learning, and different learning styles.

2. Teaching and Assessing ESL in Canada
Focuses on the Canadian EAL teaching context, including Canadian Language Benchmarks, learner proficiency, needs assessments, learner profiles, course and activity planning, classroom dynamics, and assessment practices.
3. Teaching Vocabulary and Grammar

Explores practical methods for teaching grammar and vocabulary in both communicative and academic contexts. Students develop engaging activities and
create grammar and vocabulary lesson plans.

4. Teaching Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing
Integrates previous learning into practical lesson planning, with a focus on accuracy, fluency, and the four language skills. Also develops skills in assessment, classroom management, multi-level teaching, and professional growth.

Practicum

Provides hands-on teaching experience through 10 hours of classroom observation and 10 hours of supervised teaching in an EAL setting. Students apply the knowledge and skills developed throughout the program in a real teaching environment.
